Kevin truly loves Douglas County and will to do his part to make this a better place to live, work, and raise a family.
Kevin Van Winkle is a Different Kind of Senator
Sworn into the State Senate in June 2022, he is a small business owner in Highlands Ranch and fierce defender of free markets, our rights, and our personal liberty. He is truly a servant leader for the people of Douglas County.
For his diligent leadership in 2023, Kevin was named Colorado’s Most Conservative Senator by Liberty Scorecard; is one of just two Senators recognized as a “Taxpayer Guardian” by the Colorado Union of Taxpayers; and was awarded Colorado’s “Conservative Champion of 2023” by the Colorado Republican Party.
Senator Van Winkle was also recognized by the Denver Gazette as one of the state’s “Most Effective Legislators in 2023” and has been named the “Legislator of the Year” by various groups ranging from the Realtors® Association to the Hispanic Contractors Association and was previously named the state’s “School Safety Hero” by Ready Colorado for his work advancing safer schools.
Born and Raised in Northwest Douglas County
Senator Van Winkle has deep roots in the community. He was born and raised in Douglas County – it’s where he started his business and family.
He currently represents Colorado’s 30th District, serving approximately 172,000 Douglas County residents from Castle Pines, Highlands Ranch, Lone Tree, Roxborough Park and throughout unincorporated Douglas County.
Away from the part time legislature and his professional life, Kevin serves on the Board of Directors for the Douglas County Community Foundation, volunteers regularly at his kids’ charter school, is a proud member of our church community, and plays on a local ice hockey team.
He lives in Highlands Ranch with his wife Kelly and is the proud dad of two kids, ages 4 and 7.
A Deep Respect for the Constitution and the Proper Role of Limited Government
Kevin fights for a government that work for you, not over you. He stays true to his values and is working to protect Douglas County from socialist and elitists in Denver in Washington.
Kevin has earned “A” ratings from Principles of Liberty Colorado and the National Rifle Association and has been recognized by several publications, such as the Denver Post and Colorado Peak Politics, as an “extremely effective legislator” who “holds firm to conservative values.”
During the COVID pandemic, Kevin didn’t stand by silently like so many others running for office today. He stood against the popular opinion of the time by being the first to call for the firing of Tri-County Health in March of 2020 and publishing a public letter signed by the entire Douglas County Legislative Delegation urging our county commissioners to leave Tri-County Health immediately. He also put his business on hold to help dozens of worried constituents to obtain religious and medical exemptions from the vaccine and mask mandates and to get them effective COVID-19 treatments unjustly restricted by the local health department.
A History of Success in Leadership
Before his election to the State Senate, Kevin served the people of Douglas County for nearly 8 years as a State Representative where he successfully championed for vital school safety improvements, created our state’s first a new Judicial District since 1960 centered in Douglas County, passed several large tax cuts, and was elected by fellow House members as the Assistant House Republican Leader.
During his time in the State House, Kevin helped lead a small team of fellow conservatives who fought for 24 hours without break on the House floor defending the Right to Life – the longest debate in Colorado history. He also proudly signed and submitted an Amicus Brief to the United States Supreme Court in Dobbs v. Jackson arguing for the overturn of Roe v. Wade and has filed another Amicus Brief with the Court this year once again defending Jack Phillips and our religious liberty.
Van Winkle is the Ranking Member of the Senate Finance Committee, providing oversight over legislation impacting the state’s $39 billion budget, and regularly stands in the gap to defend hardworking taxpayers and our Taxpayers Bill of Rights. He also serves on the Senate Judiciary Committee, the Committee on Legal Services, the Legislative Audit Committee, the PERA Oversight Committee he created, and is the only Republican to Chair a committee - the Tax Simplification Task Force. His work on the tax committee has been credited with moving Colorado from 39th in the State Business Tax Climate Index in 2017, to 21st in 2023.
